LA Ink

I've been emailed questions about L.A. Ink lately. I'm not sure why, and my take isn't worth much, but I'll certainly chip in an opinion.

There's a scene in Pollock, when Jackson (played by Ed Harris) is walking through Lee Krasner's home looking at her work. He's obviously skeptical until he sees a painting he likes. His demeanor changes and he interjects with surprise: "That's a damn good picture. That works.... you're a damn good woman painter."

Her sex played a role in his doubts, but that skepticism was assuaged by her talent.

I have yet to see an episode of L.A. Ink, but I'm familiar with all of the tattoo artists that'll be included. Predominately women, Kat has assembled an impressive cast. ("Cast" sounds strange, right?) And, really, I'm interested in hearing the same sort of antiquated talk directed towards damn good women tattooers.

My quick take on the cast?
As Kat's work just gets better and better, it's closing in on beautiful. Hanna Aitchison produces colorful and exciting tattoos. As much as I enjoy her pin-ups, it's her style that spreads across every single piece I enjoy the most. Kim Saigh has impressed me for years. The work that has come out of her at Cherry Bomb is incredible. In fact I see it every day on my mentor, Drew. Being able to stare at his full sleeve by Kim has taught me a lot about color. And finally, Corey Miller. With his experience, history, and talent, he's continuously pumped out quality work for years.

So when it's all said and done, I may not be thrilled about listening to people's stories behind each tattoo (if that's the route the show takes)... because that's like watching work. But I'm more than happy for each and every one of the artists. All are deserving of the success the show will bring. Even more importantly, all produce art that needs to be seen by the public.

yeah this one is already programmed on my tivo. haha... i had no idea some of these people were so good. Kim's work is amazing. IMO... a lot more quality work than comes out of Miami Ink, sans Chris Garver.

sorry that was me.

Yeah, I've also got the season pass programmed in my tivo. These days Miami Ink has gotten tot he point where I ffwd through probably 70% of the show -- I don't care about the bar, I don't care about how your husband shot a cop and got himself killed and you still want his face scratched on your skin by someone who says on national tv "I don't usually do portraits, but hey, I'll give it a shot...". I basically want to see what people bring in as source material and then the finished work.
I'll also watch Garver's bits in full just because I dig his personality.

It's funny you say that about "watching work". I still can't watch The Office for the same reason (even though I don't work in a corporate offica anymore).

I personally can't wait for this show. Hannah did both of my upper arms, she is incredible. Its good to see that everyone on the show is extremely talented. Theyre also supposed to have guest artists throughout the season, plus plenty bands coming in.

I work in a shop with just me (I'm a girl) and another woman artist, and we get asked about that show at least once a day. I feel like I need to watch it just so I will have something to say!
I never saw Miami Ink and after the many comments about how, "you're like Yoshi, except you can draw!" I regretted it. Being that LA Ink is predominantly female, I know the comments will only increase.

While in Maui back in 1991, we dropped by Deep Skin Tattoo, and noticed that all of the tat artists that day were women. I *think* there were 3 of them (been too many years ago).

Still, in a perfect world, it's more about *who* you are rather than *what* you are regardless of gender or whether they have tats or not.

Hey Sergio, I think you're referring to the incredibly talented Michael Hussar. His work is stunning.
